TE RANGI PAI.

One of the most delightful concerts ever held in New Plymouth was that given in the Theatre Royul last niglit, when Princess Te Kangi Pai gave hur' lirat song recital, assisted by Mr W. 13. Cadzow. an established favourite, and Miss Nixon and Mr F. Cornwall, two of our best loeal performers. It is not too much to say that the Princess' singing quite captivated her hearers, her clear enunciation and sympathetic treatment of her various numbers completing the victory her charming manr uer had commenced when she made her first appearance. Her first solo was tne sacred aria " Ave Maria" (Mascheroni), in which her sweet and sympathetic voice was hoard to full advantage. The audience refused to bo satisfied until the lost verse had been repeated". " The Beating of My Own Heart" was her next effort/ and again an encore was demanded, "Allan Water " being given in response. The group at the cud of the first part of the programme,- "Home tr mg," "The Cuckoo," and "Happy were gems of sweetness and delicato treat, mcnt. But it was in the second portion of the entertainment that I lie Princess raised her hearers to the full pitch of excitement and admiration. •' Home, Sweet Home " in Maori was a delicious moreeau, the intonation being perfect anl fhe melody a treat. With this was bracketed " llinc c Hine," a sweet slumber song in Maori, which was handled in an astistioally sympathetic style. A double encore followed, the Princess obliging with a coon melody and a Maori " tattooing chant," both of which earned tumultuous and earnest appreciation, the gifted songstress having lo re-appear again and again and bow her acknowledgments. Miss ISixon's fresh (lawless voice was perhaps never heard to greater advantage than iu "Wailing," and the audience showered compliments upon her. The encore number " God's Eternity," was equally fine. "Autumn," her second number, was nicely treated Mr Cadzow sang " The Minstrel Boy" in a fashion that reminded us of his former triumphs, but the humid climate seemed to affect him later in the evening and even choked his utterance in the middle of a fine rendition of " The March of the Cameron Men." Nevertheless he gave the audience some singing that fairly carried , them with him, his "Star-of Hope," and " Devotion" being splendidly , rendered without apparent effort. In 1 the duct " Home tc our Mountains" 1 with Priuccss Te liangi Pai, his tenor ' showed to its fullest richness. Mr . Frank Cornwall was heartily applauded on both appearances, contributing " The Admiral's Broom " and " The IKussiau Love Song" in a spirited style. There could hardly have been any.hint; better than the charming

blend of tl:e voices of the four performers in the (|Uiirt'.'lle "Bxveet ami Low," tin; harmony being excellent, ['lie audience was most appreciative, and there was a f,'enuinene.-.s in the applause that left no room 10 doubt the unanimous enjoyment of the large audience. Mr IT. Cornwall played the accompaniments yery successfully.
