THE NEW SPORTS GROUND.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—l was surprised to seo a local in your issue of Friday, saying, " The present football ground in tho Recreation Grounds will shortly be liandcd over to tho newly-formed committee, and that probably the first spade would bo in during the course of a month." As ono of tlie public, and consequently paTt proprietor of the grounds, allow me to enter my public protest against such being done. A much better al ternative is for the present Recreation Board to do tho work itself, and thus derive all the revenue for the further beautifying of the grounds. For a sum of £2OO the ground can be enlarged and drained by means of prison labor. All that requires to be done is lo extend the ground to the eastward only, where four chains in length can easily be obtained. The present terraces would remain, and be extended as funds permitted. Of course, football would then be played from east to west, and the best football ground in the colony obtained. The west hill could be terraced, and a few of the pinus insignis cut down. Seating accommodation for 16,000 persons could easily be obtained.

If the new Sports Committee are I really in earnest about improving tlie grounds, let them hand, over £2OO to the Keereation Grounds Board from what they have in hand, and the thing is practically accomplished. Surely the Board are not going to allow any irresponsible body to ".butcher our beautiful grounds to make a IVanaki holiday."—l am, etc., CortNKiirs Nepos.
