EMPIRE DAY CELEBRATIONS.

Empire Day was widely celebrated, with patriotic fervour. The movement is showing a great advance, 8,595 schools in Britain and 22,295 in the colonies participatiag. Flags were flying at most of the London public buildings. Some of the provincial celebrations were very elaborate. Ten thonsand children from one hundred Sheffield schools conducted a great pageant symbolising the Empire. The characteristics of the separate parts were ingeniously represented. Finally the children saluted the Union Jack, and sang the National Anthem, thirty thousand spectators joining in the salute and singing. Seven thomond Montgomeryshire children were feted and sang potriotic songs. The master of Leyland's Jewish school at Leeds read out messages from Earl Gray, Lord Northcote, Lord Selbourne and Mr Chamberlain, the latter urging them to bear in mind the privileges and obligations of the Empire.

In Canada the celebration was almost universal, with a total suspension of business.

There was a general holiday at Gibraltar, Malta and the Bermadas. Received 26, 12.53 a.m. Sydney, May 25.

In reply to an Empire Day message, Lord Northeote has received a message from the King expressing his sincere expressions of loyalty sent on behalf of Australia.
