LIGHTEN OUR DARKNESS.

TO THE KOITOB. Sin,—l am glad to seo you have taken up the question of all-night street lighting by tho Borough Council, nud hojit; your roasonable roeominciidations will he adopted. There need bo nothing lidded to what you have already advosatoil, save tint the Tradesmen's Assoii ilion, a body of m n n »rU> havo aliv.i.ly nude their influuno,' felt in nih. -.< matters concerning the wclfaro o. the town, should mako u strong pivoost to the Council fur their labium in dealing with a questi on of such importance. I coinmnul you for your fearlessness in advocating needed reforms, and trust your suggestions will be adopted.—l am, etc.,

Tiudesmas. to the editou. Sib,—l was glad to see that your observant eye has been directed to the matter of lighting the streets of New Plymouth throughout the night. The light is more necessary, I have always held, after midnight than before that time, that is from a point of view of safoty of the community, as there are plenty of peoplo about as a rule up to 12 o'clock. In pretty nearly all the towns in the province tho street lights are kept going all night, and here in New Plymouth, the capital and oldest town of the province, and a town that aspires to be a city, we are kept in darkness half the night. If it cost the borough another £l5O a year, instead of a few shillings, as you say it will, I say it would bo incumbeDt on the Borough Council to keep the lights going right through. I hope that now you have taken the matter Up, you will not let it drop until the lights are turned on. By so doing you will confer a big benefit on the community, every member of which I have spoken to on the subject is unanimous in supporting your proposal.—l am, etc., Medico.
