JAPANESE SQUADRON.

WELCOMED IN SYDNEY. Sydney, May 23. The Japanese Admiral and officers vere entertained by the Lird Mayor it a dinner in the Town Hall. It was a brilliaut gathering, and included Lord Northcote (GovernorGeneral), Sir H, Rawson (State Goyelor), and Admiral Fawkes. Lord Nothcote said he was convinced that neither Great Britain nor Japan ■vould have contracted an alliance if they had not honestly and sincerely believed that in forming such an allimce they were giving the world a strict guarantee of future peace and commercial development. He trusted they would unite the white ensign of Britain to the banner of the Rising Sun of Japan—an alliance would be renewed again and again, not for aggresive purposes, but as a safeguard of peace. He declared that the Japanese successes at sea were largely due to [the fact that most of the warships were built in Great Britain, and were commauded and officered by men who had learned their profession frem the British Navy.

Sir H. Rawson and Admiral Sir W. Fawkes, in their speeches, welcomed the visit of the squadron and the •Vnglo-Japanese Alliance.
