MR SEDDON IN MELBOURNE.
HEARTILY WELCOMED. HEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION MATTERS. Received 24,1.56 p.m. Mblbocbnb. Ma; 23. Mr Seddon has arrive 1. He was met by the Lord Mayor, Tu #n Clerk, and some members of the State Ministry and was heartily welcomed. Mr Deakin intended to hire been pre Bent bat arrived late. He afterwards saw Mr : Seddon at his hotel. A public reception by the Mayor it the Town Hall took place at noon. There was a most representative gathering including Mr DeaMn, Sir J. Forest and Mr Bent. The Lord Mayor said no one was more welcome to Australia than Mr Seddon. In reply, declared he • accepted the compliments paid more in honor of New Zealand than himself. The greatest good-will existed between New Zealand and Australia. The latter had been very kind to him, giving him Mrs Seddon. He ha from the time he arrived in Australia peAuless and unknown, always experienced the greatest kindness. In the afternoon a meeting of the I New Zealand Exhibition Commissioners was h?ld. Matters of detail were discussed, especially steamer accommodation and fares. Mr David Mills stated the Union Company proposed to put on the Maheno, and Capt. Webb said that Huddart Parker's would utilise the Biverina for the Exhibition traffic. Mr Sedi ion, with the approval of the Executive Commissioier, stated that excursion rates were essential. There ought to be a concession of at least fifty per centum on ordinary fares. Mr Mills and Capt. Webb promised to place the proposal before their respective Companies and give a reply on - Thursday.
