TURF TOPIC.

[By " Moturoa.""] Many of the horses booked to take part la tlic Wanganui meeting on Thursday and Friday have arrived at headquarters. So*lne of the latest arrivals are Mawhiti, Aeolus, Destruction, Cavalcni, Cassiopca and six representatives from the l'orirua stable.

Eurus is reported to be a greatly improved horse, and is expected to take a hand in the settlement of the Wanganui steeples. Mawhiti also is greatly fancied for the event in somo quarters.

Jolly Friar is to be put up for sale ou the second day of the races.

Lady Hune is receiving strong support in Auckland for the hurdles, being coupled with Aka Aka, Haydn and Pharos.

The traiks at Wanganui wore very soft last week, but it is reported that on Monday morning they were in good order, aud several candidates did good work. Jfaagiwhenui, youth Star, and Kuroki gave a good exhibition of jumping. Many others did good work, especially Convoy, who, it is said, is junping well, and if the Vangard gelding is caught in a ga'loping humour, hj may create a surprise.,

Miss King is reported to be m fine buckle. She was sent two rounds over the schooling fences on Siturday miming. jumping splendidly.

" Advance " states that several horses met with slight mishaps at the Blenheim meeting. Hinurewa showed sigus of 'a neness in the second day. Bushy Park was also injured on the first day and will lie unalilc to sport silk for some time. Hipporangi broke down in the Hurdle Kace on the second day and Miss Lancelot got one of her legs cut about, being galloped on. " Den os 11 writes : " See you are shaking up the Taranaki Metropolitan Club. It wants it. One phase of the situation you have not struck, is that the Club's pnrsimony in not advertising the meetings properly is responsible for a part of it* nou-sucee.ss. In 1901-5 the Club advertised their big meeting in the different centres. As a result they f»ot nearly £1(10:) in nominations and acceptances. This past year they cut down their advertising charges. Result, a shortage of some hundreds. I believe in race clubs advertising, because then the newspapers will recognise and write about your meetings j but when you don't, the papers simply make no mention of your meeting, and this is precisely what happened to the Taranaki Club this f ast year; the meetings were hardly noticed outside. Its the old game of sending a sprat to catch a mackerel. Another thing. The Club should pay its Secretary adequately, He puts in most of his tune doing and attending to the work of tlie Club, and for this lie gets a miserable £125 a year. Your suggestion that the stakes should be reduced a little and some of tlio money d ivoled to the Secretary's salary to allow of his travelling around and visiting other race meetings for the purpose of soliciting support is a good one, and tlie sooner the Club recognises it, the better it will be. The Club is still in a strong condition, and only wants to be properly handled to make it tho success it should be, and which its importance merits. I hope I that other pens will take up tho matter of improving tli > Club's alTairs.
