OPUNAKE HARBOR DISTRICT.
A large and representative meeting was held in the Town Kail, Opunake, on Monday, to discuss the matter of a harbor district for Opunake. Mr Fleming, the Chairman of the Egmont County Council, was voted to the chair, and explained that the Council, as suggested by the public meeting held some eighteen months ago, had endeavourod to have itself constituted a Harbour Board, but had not been successful, partly through the opposition of a counter petition from the Awatuna end, and from other causes which could not be fathomed, and the Minister had informed the Council that a Bill would have to be promoted to have the Council constituted, notwithstanding that the Act apparently gave tho necessary power; so the Council at its last meeting decided to go back to the public, explain the position, and retire, leaving the question again in the hands of the meeting. Mr Dudley spoke to the same effect, and thought it even more necessary now than it was when the first meeting was held that a harbor district should be formed. ,
Mr J. Stewart proposed, That it is desirable to promote a Bill to constitute a harbor district for Opunakc, and he thought that it would be advisable to hare a Board elected other than the County Council. The motion was seconded by Mr Lambie, and after being spoken to by several gentlemen, was put and carried unanimously. Mr Dudley moved that a committee be formed to ro into the matter ox area, form a Bill, etc., and rrpirt to another meeting in two weeks' time, and that the committee be Messrs Lambie, Conaglen, Forsyth, Brennan, Macfie, Moore, Stowart and Dudley. Seconded by Mr Stewart and carried. Mr Moore moved that a petition be circulated for signature asking the Government for a grant of land as an endowment, and at the same time pointed out the injustice the district has suffered.
This proposition was also carried,— " Star."
