At the Hawera Police Court yesterday the licensee of the Okaiawa Hotel was fined £3 and costs ior failing to admit the police into the house.

McKinnon) of the newspaper "Truth." For the defendants notice was given to apply for a prohibition. A gentleman who listened to the address by the Rev. T. G. Brooke, to young men in Whiteley Church last Sunday evening, has written to the preacher reminding him that he left out all reference to a necessary reform, namely, "The Reform of the Pulpit." It is Mr Brooke's purpose to deal with this question to morrow evening.* " Night-owl" writes: " The coo est piece of impudence I have seen for some time occurred on Thursday night. Double banked and a double offence—no lights, and riding on the footpath." The Garrison Band gave the last of ' the series of municipal concerts on the Esplanade last night. Under the ' able conductorship of Mr McConnell, the band played through a choice pro- > gramme, which was keenly appreciated 1 by the public, who noted with pleasure ' tho steady improvement that the band , is making. , The Assessment Court, to consider i objections to New Plymouth Government valuations, over which there was some excitement a few weeks ago, will ■ be held on 23rd May. It is understood that Messrs D. Berry and A. Standish aro the assessors to act with the S.M, at the Court. Probably not more than three objectors will now pat in an appearance. Anyone in search ot land, or a good investment, would be wise to inspect before buying elsewhere, thai ideal property known as the " Smart Suburbs."
