LONDON MARKET BEPOBT. Messrs Bewley and Griffiths, Dairy Produce Exporters, New Plymouth, are in receipt of the following market report from their London Principals, Messrs Mills and Sparrow, dated 30th March 1906. Yesterday afternoon a small conference was held at the Home and Foreign Produce Exchange, and the Agents-General for the various Colonies were invited to attend.
We regret very short notice could be giyen, as the Committee in the House of Commons commenced their sitting earlier than anticipated. Fortunately the Hon. J. W. Taverner was able to be prosent and the trade arc indebted to him for his advice and some valuable suggestions. The interests of New South Wales wore looked after by Mr Preedy, and Mr Cameron represented the Agent-General of New Zealand.
The proceedings were realiy of a private character, bat the main points which are considered necessary in the interests of the Colonies were fully discussed and agreed to. The writer was appointed with two others to give evidence before the Cjmmittee, and it is to be hoped our efforts (o stop this faking, which has been so very detrimental in the past, will be successful.
To-day there is a meeting at the London Chamber of Commerce, and everything possible is being done in the interest of Pure Butter.
Market.— There is more trade passing, and arrivals are clearing better than they hare done for some time pa«i It is surprising that such a series of serious drops should have taken place without a reaction.
Danish.—The actual price is about 3s down, although the Copenhagen quotation is advanced 8 kroners. The position for some time past has been absurd j buyers have been* paying up to 10 and 11 kroners above the Copenhagen quotations, Choice dairies are clearing.
Freuch.—No change to roport in price of either fresh or salted. Orders are comparatively small, but are eno gn to keep pace with the supply. Australian.—Choicest is being cleared up as landed at top quotations. These are however altogether too low. Secondary qualities arc still far too plentiful, unci though selling much belter than they have done for some time past, yet do not clear as freely as wo would wish. It was generally supposed with many retailers starting at " lOd pure" over the counter, any parcels left ovor would be quickly snapped up, ]mt it is now manifest that the very high prices rul'.ng for pure butter caused a large section of the public to get on to |margarinc, and it is taking time to weau them from it.
American. —Some very low prices arc being taken, aud many parcels which, on an ordinary market would
have passed muster for the counter, have been sold for confectionery purposes at ruinous figures.
New Zealand.—(Quality gon:rally is line, 011 c or two factories we have seeu being particularly choice; these are clearing, but the prices are wretched. They are worth niore, and should realise more, but agents seem unable to galvanize any life into the market. Cheese.—Selling slowly, but surely, at quotations.
