A NOXIOUS WEEDS CASE.
A FARMER FINED. Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., on Friday morning presided in the New Ply. mouth Magistrate's Court when Heslop Barnitt, a farmer on the Old Hospital Road, was charged, on the information of Mr Rowan, the Inspector, with failing to keep down blackberry and ragwort. This case had been adjournod from April 11th to enable the defendant to get his land clear, as it was shown in evidence that he had only recently come into occupation of the property. The Inspector reported that he had visited the place, and found the ragwort had been satisfactorily cleared away, but the blackberry had not received sufficient attention, although sufficient time had been given. Tho defendant gave ovidenco that he considered he had done satisfactory work, and the eradication of the weeds was still going on. The Magistrate said this was a bad case, and thought the Inspector had represented it very fairly. The cvidence of a neighbour at the previous sitting had been most unfavorable to the defendant, who would be convicted and fined £1 and costs on the blackberry information. The Inspector withdrew the information with regard to ragwort.
