FALSE PRETENCES.
PER PBESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, May 11. Chief detective Marsack prosecuted a man named W. B. Willoughby, aliai Riley and Whitely, in the Police Court this afternoon, for obtaining Ll) lOi from John Paton by false pretences, Paton, a farmer at Wairoa South, stated that in December, 1003, Willoughby represented to him that he was about to buy a tarm at Bombay. He declared that his balance at the Hank of New Zealand totalled L 1,500, and witnoss thought it safe in consequence to cash one of accused's cheques for L 9 10s. It was returned marked "no accouut." Evidence was called to show that Willoughby never hal any account at the Bank of New Zealand, and accused, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was committed for sentence at the Supreme Court.
