PER MESS ASSOCIATION, Dcnbdin, May 11. At the Police Court to-d.iy, Henry Wong Gye, a Chinese half-caste. ° sentenced to six months :n chargos of defrauding tradesmen by means of valcclos* cheques. He passed three cheques on <liff <rent tradespeople for 615, £lO, and C-5, by purchasing goods and receiving the difference in change. A nnn who wis charged at the Police Court with deserting his wife alleged tint the woman was not married to him. The prosecutor stated that after the in .rriage, in Victoria, she gave the certificate to defendant. The case was mljiurned penJing the arrival of a certificate.
At the Polioe Court to-diy, the proprietory of a mercery shop was fined the nominal sum of Is and costs for employing his assistant later than 6 o'clock on two evenings at Easter. He kept open late on Good Friday ere and also on the succeeding Saturday. Defendant was under the impression that he could do so, so long as the hours did not exceed 50 in the week.
