STRATFORD NOTES.
—«, . i (From Our Own Correspondent.) 1 Mr A. K. Smart left yesterday for Christchurch to attend tho annual meeting of Grand Lodge of Freemasons. I regret to record the death of Mr Billderbeck, of Stanley road. The contractors for the local hospital are making slow progress on account of the bad weather, Mr Joe McCluggage, whose health if not too good, intends leaving for the South Sea Islands on n trip. The shooting season has now fairly opened. Sportsmen report a scarcity of birds.
We have a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lately formed hero. Already a gentleman from Wavcrly (who evidently takes a keen interest in these societies) lias forwarded tho local Secretary a cheque for £5 towards tho funds of the Society. Most of the dairy factorios are running three days a weok now. On Sunday evening, at 5.50, the fire bells rang out an alarm of (ire, which fortunately only proved to be a chimney on fire in a bachelors' establishment in Juliet Street.
The only business at the District Court this morning was the granting of throe discharges in bankruptcy, Mr N. J. King, the contractor for five platelayers' cottages at Waipuku, has made a start with them.
