TURF TOPICS. (liV JIOTUBOA.) Splendid acceptances have been received for the Hawkc's Bay meeting, which opens to-day, and large fields are likely lo go to the post. It looks a certainty for Mr Stead's Porcelain to score his first win in the Hawkc's Bay Stakes, run on the second day. Apologue, the half-brother to Gladsome, passed through New Plymouth on Friday last, cn route for Hastings. After his good performance in the Autumn Handicap at Auckland last month, when he ran second to I'arilutu, the colt may have something to say in the decision of the Hawkc's Bay Cup. '■Phaeton," in the "X.Z. Herald," states that no horse in training at Ellcrslie is carrying himself better than, is Leonator. The Lcolantis gelding commenced the season in very modest company; but the Leonator ?cen out at Avondale in September is a very different horse to-day, and with a set of legs of the steel bar order he I promises to have an extended career
It is understood I hat M r Stead has chosen the name of Bouiform for the yearling brother to Sungod.
A full brother to Achilles was sold at the yearling sales in New South Wales for 525 guineas. The " Sydney Sportsman" states that 11 ii'lvoubotliiiiii (a well-known Australian trainer) intended leaving for Auckland last week with Step-out and Larissa. The former won the Goodwood Handicap at Adelaide on Satur. day hist, so probably the trainer may have altered his intentions. B;tiva has been scratched for the Hawkc's Bay Cup.
