FIRES.
MB PBBSS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, May 8. A fire occurred in the Mercantile Jtxohange, Manners street, this morning. Four rooms oocupied by Sydney Beatty, photographer, and the eon. en s, were badly damaged. The con. tents were insured for £176 in the Mate Insurance office, and the hn.M;.» was insured for £3OOO in the Sou£ British. Other tenants in the buildini who suffered damage were the International Correspondence School which was partly damaged by water The insurance is £IODO in the Alliance and Ssoulh Pacific. The Mortgage Discount office was (lightly, damaged by water. Thaiiuawmoe u in tlie Standard office. The origiitof [the fire is unknown. ,*>■ u . , , Hokitiba, May 8. Preston s Criterion Hotel, Kumara, was destroyed by fire ,ut 8.80 this morning. The fire spread with grfat rapidity, and nothing was saved. The ooeupants esoaped with difficulty.
