HAWERA RACES. SECOND DAY. (By Oar Special Reporter). The concluding day of the Egmont Hieing Club's Winter Meeting was held under favorable weather conditions, and the attendance was fair. The oourie was rather cut up after the first day's racing. A roller would have greatly improved it. Although the fields in jome of the events were small the racing was most interesting, and olose finishes were recorded in almost every race. The totalisator investments on the first day amounted to £1,246 and the second day £4,083, as against £5,435 and £1,581 for the tame* meeting last year, making a deficiency of £1,687. Going along the back Somali came up on the outside, but entering the straight the field were strung out with Becreation and White Star in the lead, and Marvia last. A splendid setto between thejirst and second horses to the post resulted in a head victory for White Star, the rest of the field tailing oS > with Marvia a bad last. Time, 1.20 2-5. Totalisator 579. Lucena's Silver Shell, 7.0, (Deeley) 2 281 Mr W. Christie's St. Bill, 8.1. (G. Price) 3 Also started: 71, Bustique 9.0. (Gray); 28, Idassa 7.7. (8. Beid). The starter got the field away almost in line. Bustique at once got his head in front, but was almost immediately headed by St. Bill, who raced into the straight about a length ahead of the rest. 'A couple of hundred yards from the post Silver Shell and St. Claimer Joined the leader, and, amidst great excitement, St. Claimer won by the shortest margin, St. Bill about a head away, third. Time 118 3-sth. Total on machine 631. Div. £6 16s 6d. At the close of the race the stewards held an enquiry intj th« running of St. Claimer. The meeting lasted some time, but. they eventually decided to take no action.

Just before entering the straight Bangiwhenua made a forward more and looked all over a winner when the straight was entered, bat f»ded away at the finish and a good raea to the post resulted in a win for Bomany King by about a length, with the same distance between second and third. The horses gave some trouble at the start, t principally through the fracliousness of Kaimere,but Mr O'Counor 'exercised a good deal of patience and got a splendid start. Kaimere assumed the lead, when, at the back of tlia sourse Mooshen and Lingerer moved Hp,) with Champion lying haildy, 'but before entering the straight the latter appeared to .get blocked on the rails and just failed to get up in time, allowing Kainwte to win by about half a head. On entering the straight Scenery gradually made up her ground and at about a hundred yards from the post it Icoked as if anything would win, but amidst great excitement Scenery just got up in tiim to beat Claremont by a head, the third horse close up, Bustique and The Leader finishing together about a length and a half behind. FEB FfiESS ASSOCIATION. Chbistchchch, May 3. At a meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday, the Programme Committee's report, which was adopted, recommended 1 that no alteration be made to the New Zealand Cup, but the Grand National Steeplechase be increased to 1000 sovs.
