On making inquiries the New Zealand Governmentias ascertained that, the famine in Japan and the hardships endured by the people, are more sever* than was at first thought to be the case, Tho Japanese Government having intimated that the effects of the famine were under estimated, and that it was prepared to receive assistance, the New Zealand Government has forwarded £IOOO as a contribution from this Colony for the relief of the suffering.

Mr Seddon has received the following communication through the Secretary of State for the Colonies " Referring to your telegram respecting the San Franciso disaster, the following has been received from His Majesty's Ambassador at Washington: "The President desires me to express to the Government and people of New Zealand his deep appreciation of their sympathy. He feels sure that they will understand the people of the United States are none the less grateful because it lias been decided that it will be unnecessary to accept help from outside." Under these circumstances the New Zealand Government has decided to send to the New Zealand Agent at San Francisco the sum of five thousand dollars (£1250) for expenditure in the relief of suffering, and to ensuro comforts for New Zealandcrs in San Francisco who may have suffered by the disaster.
