EDUCATION AND CRIME IN AUSTRALIA.
THE SLANDEROUS INTERVIEW. INDIGNATION IN COLONIAL CIRCLES. DAILY MAIL ASPERSIONS. London, April 27. Messrs C. A. Julius ami E. Thorne, Queenslanders, participated in the discusion evoked, the former indig-, nantly denouncing the interview as a slander, and the latter asserting that the Agent-General interviewed spoke the words in soberness and truth. There is much indignation in colonial circles. The iraprossion is that a confidential conversation with some Agent-General has been abused. The Daily Mail has published a contributed article alleging that secular education has caused a groat increase of crime in Victoria and that the re suits in Australia are deplorable and absolutely shocking.
" DAILY MAIL " ASSERTIONS CONTRADICTED. EDUCATION A LEAVEN FOR GOOD. Received 28, 4.57 p.m. London, April 28 Mr Coghlan, on behalf of the AgentsGeneral, contradicted the " Daily Mail," proving statistically that crime lias markedly decreased in Victoria during the last twenty-four years. Referring to Australia generally, he says there is a large and continuous decrease in crime, especially among the native born, attributable to the decline of drunkenness.
There was ample evidence* that education was proving an active leaven for good throughout the community.
