THE STRATFORD DISQUALIFICATIONS. APPEAL TO THE METROPOLITAN CLUB. DISQUALIFICATION REMOVED. On the last day of tlic Stratford races (15tli March) a fracas, it will be remembered, took place, between a few patrons and some of the officials, of the Club. As a result, the Stewards of the Stratford Ciub, at a meeting on the 2nd inst., resolved to disqualify James Mitchell for one year, the charge being that in resisting removal from the Stewards' enclosure he assaulted Dr. Paget and W. H. Youug ; to fine J. D. Mitchell (father of the former) £5, Alex, Mitchell £lO, and A. H. Christie £lo—all on the charge of creating and assisting to create a disturbance. All the parties conrerueil belong to Manaia.

Against the lining and disqualification an appeal was made to the Metropolitan Club, which sat last night to consider the matter, at New Plymouth. All the members of the Committee were present. Mr .T. Paul, president, vacated the chair in favour of Mr Oliver Samuel, on account of the latter's knowledge of the racing law. All the appellants were present, as was the Secretary of the Stratford Racing Club, Mr Mackay, and its I counsel, Mr Anderson. : The appellants contended that the Club had acted arbitrarily and without , power in acting as they had. They . quoted Rule 8, part fi. in the " Regulations for Race Meetings" (N.Z. Rules of Racing),—" A race meeting shall be deemed to commence at 10 o'clock 011 the morning of the day on which the first race is advertised to be run, and to conclude at 10 o'clock on the evening of the last day of the meeting," and also rule 3 of part 4 of the "Rules of Racing—The powers of the Stewards shall continue after the meeting for the purpose of adjudicating upon nil objections and complaints made during the meeting." The appellants statod that no complaint had been made during the meeting. The representatives of the Club, on the other hand, stated that there had been a meeting of Stewards, as a result of complaints made, immediately after the conclusion of the mcr 'iig, it being decidad on the course 1., hold an enquiry into the matter, a ; date to be fixed that suited the conv. icnce of the Stewards, as it was impr -ible to conduet an enquiry there and then. The Metropolitan Committee considered that the Stratford Club's version was not borne out by evidence. The following unanimous division was announced by the Chairman That 1 as no objection or complaint was made ' during the race meeting, or until Lwu days after it was concluded, the ; Stewards had no jurisdiction to hear the charges, or to disqualify or tine. There is nothing to prevent the Com mittce of the Club from taking steps to ; charge atiy persons who have misbehaved themselves, and to punish them ! if found guilty. The decisions arc • therefore disapproved of, and the sums ■ deposited must be refunded to the per- ' sous who have deposited theni,"
