TAPUAE DEVIATION.

TO THE 13U1T0B. Sir,—To us who live on [the south of the Tapuac, it is most oncouraging to find that the Taranaki County Council has awoke to tho fact at last, that something must be done in tho way of metalling, so as to keep the road open for traffic. Now, Sir, there is a saying " That the one that looks on sees most of the game," and it has struck me that these constant washouts are going to cost the Council (otherwise the ratepayers) a considerable amount of money; and while I agree that the concrete wall that it is proposed to build and the safety tunnel, are both necessary; might I suggest that now is the time to still lower, the tunnel under the road. If that were done, say another four feet, money would be saved in the concrete. Not only that, but by continuing at tho lower grade some eightcon feet from the intake of the tunnel, it would strike a deep pool and so lower the water and take four feet less of a wall. This Tapuao has beeome a bug-bear to all who use the road, and much forbearance has been shown, so that any suggestion should be taken by those in authority in the same spirit that it is offered.— I am, etc., Katepayeb.
