WELLINGTON ANTICIPATIONS. [By "Motcboa,"! The Autumn Meeting of the Wellington Bacing Club commences today, and will be concluded on Saturday. For the first day the fields are aot very large, the best being the Thompson Handicap, the principal race of the day. T'hc contestants in this are likely to number about fourteen. A. double machine will be opened on the Thompson andKailway Handicaps. It i« understood the Club has decided to open a telegraph office on tho course. The course is reported to be in good order, and wll fine weatkir the Club should have a successful meeting. The first race is the Huhdle 1 [ indicap (to start at 12 noon), in which a fleld of seven figure on the card. The places may be filled by St, Lyra ... 1 Waitarere 2 Hydrant 3
In the Waiwetu Handicap (12.10 p.m.) two of the runners also figure in the Thompson Handicap, but given a start I will name Polyanthus 1 Marguerite 2 Czarevna 3 The next item i< the Silverstueam Hack, of 7 furlongs (120 p.m.). jEolus is in winning form lately, and seems pretty well in with 8.10, but Cavatina (Lochiel-Melissa) is such a good bred one, she may be capable of beating her opponents. I will name Cavatina 1 iEolus 2 Biflemaid 3
The big event of the day is the Thompson' Handicap (2.20 p.m.), which contains the largest field on the card. Several of those engaged have been showing winning form lately, and it is a difficult matter to select one as the likely winner. If Solution were in her best form she would possess a chance second to none, but it i 3 doubtful if the Soult mare has quite recovered from her indisposition. Signalman is in the post of honour with 9.0, and is in winning form, as was evidenced at Canterbury last week. Gold Crown also put up a good performance at Tauhcrenikau by winning the Autumn Handicap (I mile), carrying 9.7 in good time, with case. King Billy has been doing good work on the track, but has been allotted quite enough weight. Mobility also is in good. form and nicely handicapped. To attempt to name the placed horses I will suggest King Billy 1 Mobility 2 ' Signalman 3 with Czarevna the best outsider if started. The Bailway Handicap, 6 furlongs (3 p.m.) has only au acceptance of seven. The placing may be Ailsa ... 1 , Glcnowlet 2 Gawam 3
In the Plpmet Nuksery Handicap (3.10 p.m.), for two-year-ohls, run over a distance of 5 furlongs, the placed horses may be Xto 1 William 2 English Channel... ... 3 The North Island Challenge Stakes (1.20 p.m.) is the next race that calls for attention. It is reported that lsolt will probably start, and if so, it should be a good race between Mr Stead's filly and the champion Achilles. The latter will have to carry 10.1, having incurred a penalty by his recent wins. Nevertheless, I think Achilles will win if the going is suitable. TJie last event on the list is the Ti.YAKom Hick, of G furlongs (o p.m.), in which the judge's placing njay bp Hatley 1 Mataara 2 Aboriginal 3
