THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—As the News, is certain to be read by a large number of people before recording their votes tliere is yet timefor on ■ word. Mr Dockrill's connection with the gasworks means more tlian you would appear to think. When he wai Mayor before, he had frequcntly to leavo the chair when eloc-t'-b. lighting came up for discission. .\ T oiv, wo want a May >r at the head of oji' executive who can preside over all its busiucss, and not one who has ever, lastingly to be dodging about because he cannot energetically support certain parts of the Council's business, I am told that Mr Dockrill has £2OOO in the Gas C>. At 8 per c<>nt this means aninoome if £l6O a year. In the fwe of this fact, is he likely to care whether hi.< rites (or mino for the matter of tbat) are increased a paltry few shillings because the eleetrio light may be so run as not to pay P I think not. To be plain sir, would you have a man at the head of the News with a pound interest in it, and, at the same time, a two thousand pound interest in some other paper in opposition to you f "Ye cannot serve two masters" was said a long time ago, and it is true today.—l am, etc, Lioht.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—As Mr Dockrill's opponents have slung their last mud, kindly allow me the opportunity of saying what a contrast there is betas ;n the gentlemanly conduct of Mr Dockrill's supporters to Mr Roy's, and the manner in whioh they act toward Mr Dockrill. Although no imputations wcro made against Mr Dockrill for flic way he carried out the duties of treasurer, I now find there is an attempt to throw the whole blame on him for the Exhibition deficit. I had hoped long ere this all would have admittdd the Exhibition was too extensive for the population which we had to support it; hence the difficulty. They conveniently forget tho many affairs which Mr Pookrill successfully carried through financially and otherwise when he was Mayor, of which it should be sufficient to mention tho Band Contest and the Carnival.—l am, etc., Voteb.
TD THE BDITBB. Sib,—Thero seems to be an erroneous impression abroad that " the trade " is taking an active part in the present contest. Whatever Mr Watkins or any one else connected with the trade may have done is entirely on his own responsibility, and without anything from myself, or the Licensed Victuallers' Association. As a matter of Fact Mr Watkins is away on a fortnight's holiday, and will not return till after the election. Personally I have not signed eithor requisition, nor have I canvassed one single individual in the interests of either candidate. - I am, etc., Jas. Paul.
