POULTRY NOTES.

(Srwi.iL to Nrws.) In my last week's notes I tivnti d on grit, and pointed out, that a good grit assisted in producing plenty of eggs. Xow there are eggs and eggs for use. some large and some small, some white, others brown, some fresh, and some better, with the shell on them cracked.

But what I want to emphasise is the question : Is it right to sell eggs by the dozen ? I say, No, as you get no more for a large Minorca egg than a pencilled Hamburg. I was discussing this question with a gentleman on the train the other day, and he said that in Palmerston North they were selling the poultry by the pound, but could not agree about the eggs, as some storekeepers preferred to buy and sell by the dozen, and trusttd to sharpness in getting big eggs. I said I thought it would have to be done by Act of Parliament, and pointed out that some storekeepers would rather keep open until 8 or U p.m. than close at 6 p.m., but by Act of Parliament all came on the same footing, and it is the case in the selling of eggs by the pound. I feel sure that if the egg producers were to combine, they could soon have their eggs sold by weight, and there would then be some encouragement for them to keep a strain of fowls that produce large eggs, I am convinced that the fowls that lay the large eggs are the biggest eaters, which is quite natural, as the egg is made from what a fowl eats. While on the egg question, I would like to say to the producers that if they want the top price for their eggs, they must brand them with the date and the namo of seller. I saw a small machine which is not at all expensive, which would be paid for in a week by the extra price obtained for branded eggs. I hope before long to see the best eggs branded and sold by the pound.
