THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
TO THE EitlTOß. Sin,—As I have been asked my views by so many electors of the Borough as to the retrenchment proposals adopted by tho Council, I must assume it is a matter in which a very large interest is taken. I would, therefore, thank you to allow me space in your valuable paper to say that I entirely agree with the action of the Council ns the most feasible way to efEect that object, and, if elected, I will uphold their decision by every means in my power.—l am, etc., E. Dockeill,
SPECIAL FORECAST. TO TIIE EDITOR. Sin, It is unnecessary at the present juncture to impress on NewZealanders the enormous destruction of life and property that has taken place along the Pacific foreshoro of the United Slates of America, owing, I believe, to submarine disturbances at a distance of 300 miles from the American Continent, and at a depth of six miles, inducing a huge landslip which extends over 1000 square miles, but as it is likely t) take time for this to permanently settle, and, as previously shown by me in your issue of the 2oth ult., the United States have to meet further troubles, it will be well, I consider, for New Zealand and Australia to olt'er land and homes to a few thousand Americans, I trust, Sir, that you will do all you can to induce the Government and people of New Zealand to more than welcome many of these now penniless Americans, and that, instead ot over-taxing our resources, as suggested in Wellington, we otl'er large inducements to suitable immigrants, paying passages, giving land, and otherwise helping them to get on theii feet again. Of course, relatives will, il is hoped, help their own kith and kiD with immediate assistance.—l am, etc.. Feancis A. Teeuelles, Quaker.
