NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At tlie usual fortnightly mooting of the New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday evening, there were present-; 'His Worship I lie Mayor (Mr R Cook) and Cm Webster, iirowue, Stohr llutchen, Brooking, Wilson, Ewing and Monteath. Mr M. Jones asked that the Council should put into repair the footpath in front of his new stables in Iving street. —The Council. decided that it has no intention of kerbing and channelling on that side of the street at present. Mr Griffin;; of Helson, wrote asking that he be allowed to submit plans for the now. town hall and library.—Cr limn* considered local architects could lia d e _lhis matter.—The writer will be inform id that the Council is not in a i Ooit 011 to deal with his letter.
lh: dog-tax co lector reported that two owners of dogs had signed Uecl ra tii ns that their dogs wore working rl< gs, when the dogs were r.o; as stated. •.he matter was referrtd to the works committee, in order that the town clerk, as borough solicitor, might investigate the matter and give an opinion as to whether these owners should be_compelled to pay the full " pet dog " tax or to be prosecuted for making a false declaration. A, P. Boss, whose license as a driver had been suspeuded for two months about a year and a half since, was granted a renewal of his license, con, ditional on a favorable report being obtained by tho town clerk. The Electric Light Committee recommended: That the previous resolutions offering to light Carrington read for the sum of £2O be rescinded; Tuatthe C irringtou lioad Board be informed that the Council are prepared to light the Carrington Road for one mile from ihj Borough boundary with ciglu 32 c.p., lights, for the snm of £35 per annum, and for 1J miles with similar iglts fir the sum of £52 per annum j that a progrjss pa;m:nt of £3OOO be made to tlu Brush ilectrical Engineering Company; That the Borough euginecr be authorised to provide a cait entrance to the Distributing Station, and repair the ro idivay; That a fence be erected batween the. Distributing Station and the railway embankment; Tuat the arc lamp at Elliot Street bj sliif e I to tha corner pf Egmont and King Streets, and that two incandescent lights Lc substituted at Elliot Strett; That the Electrical Engineer prepare an pstim ito for installing the electric li;ht on th> wharf at the breakwater, lis requesle! by the Chairman'of the' Harbour Board.
The report was adoplc 1, except that the clause re the lighting of Devon street east was referred back to the committee for further consideration. It was decided that the bank in Cameron street be utt away, to give the section an alignment, Mr Eookes to contribute £5, and total cost not to exceed £l2.
On the siggestion of Cr. Browne, it was decided that th;> engineer immediately attend to tlip matter of repairing Courtenay street, between Liardct and Currie streets.
Cr. Wilson considered t!ic Council must insist on ggttiijg au answer to their letters and telegrams to the General Manager of Railways, or else Councillors shi.u'il "wrilc themselves down im asses." Cr. Montialh seconded. Tho Railway Department should r.ot he allowed to rjb the Council anl the birou.<h of valuable propcity without (oasulting the Council at all, or paying s mo compensation.
The 'Mayor maintained that tho Council should have been approached before the work was started. Owners of property were being consulted—why not the Council ? The motion was carried.
The Mayor moved, according to notice, that Air A. H. Kendall, the present sanitary inspector, be appointed bopoifgh inspector and sanitary engineer at a salary of .tSOO.

Cr, Monteath supported the ofr jection, and read a copy of the reso. lution.
The Town Clerk, at the Mayor 's request, searched the records, and found that the point of order raised was fatal to the motion, which the Mayor was given permission to withdraw.
