TRADES CONFERENCE.
PER PERM ASSOCIATION. Chustchcuch, April 21. The Trades Conference carried motion that in the opinion of tkea Conference, the tariff should be revised in the beginning of 1906 sessions, so as to give greater encouragement to all New Zealand industries. At the Trades Conference the committee's report on the scheme for the better protection of unionists was adopted. The report recommended that in view of the persecution of a ,-, large number ,o£ unionists and those who take part in the affairs of unions, notwithstanding the provision made lor the prevention of such practices by the Conciliation aud Arbitration Act, the Government be requested to make special inquiries into cases involving discharges from employment, or the boycotting of any unionist that may be reported to the local Labor Office by any registered union; the anion to procure inch cases and the Department to prosecute. It is further recommended that every Council set up a standing committee to protect the interests of unionists in this respect, by enquiring into any alleged cases of persecution in their district, and assist the union in pro- ' curing evidence and testing the merits of each case before reporting same to the Labor Department. Failing satisfaction being obtained through the Department, the committee to take such steps as will terminate /lie boycott and have justice done to the aggrieved party. The Conference decided to urge the Government to make provisions for
the enforcement of Labor Day, by providing a penal clause for breaches. The proposal from the Wanganu: Conncil that the Conference consider the need for the suppression of trust> and combines was referred to the executive.
The Auckland Council was apDointed the executive for the ensuing year. Dunedin was the place fixed for the
holding of next year's conference. " The platform was amended, bringing it into line with the resolutions passed by the Conference. It was decided that all remits for the 1907 OrderPaper be sent to the executive befon the end of January 1 1907, and not more than six remits, exclusive of platform, be sent by each council.
The executive was instructed to have the minutes of the Conference printed, copies to be sent to all M's.H.R. and Trades Councils throughout.the world.
The usual votes of thanks were passed and the council concluded.
