RESCUED FROM THE DEBRIS
REMARKABLE SURVIVAL OF POST OFFICE CLERKS. ALCOHOL POURED IN THE GUTTERS. POLICE SEIZE ALL FOOD SUPPLIES. SERIOUS WATER FAMINE. Received 23, 12.8 a.m. New Yobk, April 22. Eleven clerks, apparently dead, were found in the Post Office debris. They had been without water or food for three days. They are now recovering.
Tho police poured into the gutters all alcohol from the saloons.
From the grocers' stores thoy seized all provisions, and arc distributing them sparingly to to long queues of applicants
The water famine is even more serious than want of food. Furious fijhtinj took plice until the military seized and dispensed the water. Hundreds wandered tho hills in search of water, and drank anything. The mains are nearly repaired, and it is hoped ten million gallons a day will soon bo available.
