Up to eight o'clock lust night the tires extended for eight square miles, invotviug several hundred oity blocks. The damage amouuts to at least one hundred million dollars. The district surrounded by Vallego, Howard East and Sansome streets, embracing almost the entire wholesale district, was clean swept by fire. The district baindcd by Market, Eighth and Poison stwets is also devastated. The latter iuoludos the majority of. finest and most substantial buildings.
Crevices six feet wide opened in several streets. Entire side-walks
were torn up and tram tracks strange, ly twisted. The Palaco hotel was burnt. Two ships, anchored in 'he Bay, sunk.
