FOOTBALL.

CLUB MATCHES. Wellington, April 15. The football season was opened by several club matches played on the Athletic Park. As is usual at the opening of the season the players were not in form, and the games were little more than exercise contests. Poneke beat Napier City by 23 to nil, Wellington beat Christchurch by six to nil, and Athletic 17, beat Waipuna 3.

REFEREES' CONFERENCE. TEB WtESS ASSOCUTOX. Wellington, April 11. At the .annual conference of the New Zealand Referees' Association (Rugby game) there were present: Mr Isaacs (President), Mr Warden (vicePresident), Mr Robb (lion, secretary), and the following delegates:—Auckland, Mr Mackie ; Tarauaki, Mr Grifliths i Wanganui, Mr Simpson; Mann, watu, Mr Manning; Wellington, Mr Evans; Hastings, Mr Stubbs ; Nelson, Mr Oldershaw; Canterbury, Mr Evans Otago, Mr Wilson. The president said the leading members of the All Black team, were of opiuion that referees in New Zealand had little to learn from referees at Home. The laws of the game were discussed and a uniform interpretation of each arrived at, which it is hoped will bring about the desired purpose of the conference.

THE ASSOCIATION GAME. TARANAKI UNION. Tho anuual meeting was hold at New Plymouth on Thursday evening, representatives being present from New Plymouth, (two clubs), Ur«nui and Waitara. Mr S. Clarke presided. The balancc-sueot showed a deficit of £1 l'Js, which will bo balanced by return of money advanced to a playor by way of expenses. It was decided to adliato with the Union. Officers were elected: President, Mr R. Cock; Secretary, Mr L. Frost; Committco aud vicc-Prcsidents to be elected lator. The Association's affliation fee was fixed at one guinoa, and the colours chosen, viz., pink and green shirt, dark knickers. Messrs W. and J. Moore were elected delegates to the Now Zealand Union. The Cup fixtures will bo drawn at tho next meeting of the Union, to be held at Urenui on tho 26th iust. Referees will be appointed at tho same time. The Clubs u/Uiatod to the Union are two at New Plymouth, and one each at Hawcra, Inglewood, llrenui and Waitara.
