THE PETROLEUM WORKS.
SUCCESS IN SIGHT. On Thursday word was brought to town that Mr Fair, manager tit the Moturoa petroleum boring works, had completely overcome the water difficulty by means of the six-inch casing recently lowered to take the place of the lire-inch, pipes. In conversation with a Njjws reporter, Mr Fair said that on Wednesday afternoon he had taken over three barrels of oil from the bore by means of a sand-pump, and this work was continued on Thursday with equal success. "I am fully confident now," said Mr Fair, " that the water difficulty is overcome, tuily confident that I will prove in tho next few days that we are in the centre of an oil-field and that the petroleum can be obtained in payable quantities." At present, there is a strong pressure of gas and any water baled out is thick with oil. To-day Mr Fair will probably lower the oil-pump, and start pumping in earnest. If there is any water, a packer will probably bo placed, in order to " make assurance doubly suro."
