THE EARL AND THE GIRL
Mr John Sheridan's popularity seems to have suffered not a whit since his previous appearance in New Plymouth. The fun making proclivities of a man able to piny to perfection the "widdy" in " Fun on the Bristol," were, of course, sufficient to ensure a full house for the " Karl and the Girl," staged on Thursday night at the Theatre f .Royal. The piece, ridiculous in the extreme, gave the popular comedian ample opportunity to display his comic turn, and Mr Sheridan appeared to be at the top of his form, his jokes and topical hints being embellished by his own apparent love of fun. Whenever lie appeared the audience laid back for a laugh', and laughed heartily. lie was supported by a combination of talented artists, who played their respective parts in a highly capable fashion. Miss Heba Barlow as Liz i Shodiiam, had a difficult part, but scored heavily at every turn, her singing of]" Bombay " earning a vociferous encore. Miss Kay Jones figured as Elphin Haye, an American heiress, and was very well placed. "The Blush Rose of England " was her best vocal effort. Mr Thomas Curran impersonated a pushing Tanked solieiio» to the life, singing " The Alan behind," and Messrs Hupert Julian (Hon. CrewBoodle), and Avalou Collard (Dick YVargravc) made their parts telling. Other characters were well sustained, and the dressiug and dancing were of a high order. The laughter throughout the whole evening was hearty, but would have been no less hearty, and the lines just as expressive, without the use of those two little words commencing with the letter " d," and with a little of its coarseness eliminated.
