INFERIOR BUTTER IN LONDON.
BELIEVED TO BEFXB TO ■ AUSTRALIA, PKB PEBM IfSOCUTIOIf. Wblmnotos, April 9. With roference to the report ia j Saturday ■ London market cablegram* that the quality of the bulk of Colonial butter on offer was unsatisfactory, statements made by the heads of Ormi ongaged in butter trade make it prac* tioally certain that jtlie menage refer! to Australian butter. Attcr seeing the menage, Mr J. G. Harkness, seoretary of the National Dairy Associationof New Zealand, said: " All butter exported from Australia and New Zealand is looked upon u Colonial bntter, but to far as we know here from the graditfg of our butter for shipment, the quality tljis season is equal to, if not better, than previous seasons' batter. Therefore I think the cablegram refers more especially to Australian butter. I» Wiring through tho principal Australian newspapers you will find it stated that the quality of Auitralia# butter is not up to the mark this season." The tat Agent-General's telegram received hen dated 2nd April states, ' The market is unfavourably affected by large quantities of medium quality,' yfg interpret that to mean it does not refor to the Aew. Zealand article, a* shown by the prioes, New Zealand being 99s per cwt., as compared with Australian 93s per owt. 1 * Mr Harkness's view was borne ont by Mr J. B. MaoEwau,-who said the telegram mutt apply to Australian, for the simple reason that no complaints have come through, as far as they an aware, in connection with the best New Zoaland brands, while it is p n J in the trade that a fairly large per centage of Australian has been nn- 4 satisfactory.
