He suffered less than, the other thirteen survivors, and joked when brought to the surface. He thought he had been entombed a week. He lived on coffee, brandy, and a little water and bread which he found on the bodies of the dead.

He suffered terribly from the cold, though he wrapped himself in clothes removed from the dead.

He vainly tried to find an axo with which to commit suicide when hope was abandoned. He wandered extensjbly about the mine, but discovered no one alive. Crowds of women at the pits mouth uieuacc the engineers, accusing them of cowardice.
