"JOHN CHINAMAN."

TO THE EDITOR. Sin, —Whilst your loader and the letters which have supported it have proved very interesting reading, they have only touched one side of the case. Let us ask the question : Why are.the Chinese fruiterers here ? The answer is quickly given: Because their shops are more up-to-date in appearance ; because they better fruit and in larger quantities than the white fruiterer ; and because they are cheaper and always keen for business. Take our local shops as an instance. Does a single one of them make anything like a comparison with the Celestials in the matter of a window display ? They are simply not in it, Do they carry as good a stock? If they do they don't show it. John Chinaman, whatever his faults, is a good business man, He pays cash, and is prompt with it. He buys good fruit, and sells cheap. He dresses his window to show what he sells. He is ever ready to serve his customer, who is always greeted with a suave smile. His shop is spotlessly clean and tidy, This looks like a cheap advertisement for the Chinese, or an advocacy of their right to stay in the colony. It is neither. We can well do without them. "ExFruiterer " knows this, and ho knows, too, that the Chinaman can beat him at his own garao.—l am, etc., SEAIICIILKinT.
