Mr Hickman F. Russell has been appointed district agent for the Now Zealand Government Accident Insurance Department. Rev. J. N. Buttle, who has been appointed to the Masterton Methodist Circuit, will leave for his new sphere of work on Friday morning next. He will preach his farewell sermon at Whitley Church to-morrow. The alcoholic beverages that may have been so pleasant and cheap to pour in, were found by one of Thursday's " drunks" to be unpleasant, and expensive to get rid of. Medical assistance and a pump had to be obtained, and the unwilling patient was was ordered by the Court to pay a guinea doctor's fee.

At the S.M, Court on Friday morning two inebriates were fined 5s and cost, and 3s 9d cacli express hire. A native, for inciting to resist the police, was fined £2 and costs, in default a month's imprisonment, and another man, charged with resisting the police, was remanded for a week.
Whilst Mr J. Reeve was driving between Inglewood and Egmont Village, he stopped to rest his horses on the side of the' road. The bank gave way, and precipitated the horses and cartload of bricks into the crock, and one of the leaders was drowned.
Tlic harvest thanksgiving services in connection with the South Road Methodist Church, will be conducted to-morrow, when special hymnal praise will be offered. A children's ilower service will be hold at 3 p.m., and on Monday evening a concert and sale of produce. The Treasury, in answer to repeated demands, has forwardod to the Taranaki County Council advice that the loans of £2OOO for the Tapuae and Oakura bridges on the South road and £loooforMauganui bridge on theTariki road are now available. Of the £2OOO, the Oakura bridge will absorb £BOO and the Tapuae £1,200.
Mr R. Crockett, Inspoctor of Noxious Weeds, has recently made an inspection of lands leased by the Taranaki County Council, and is of opinion that that body is fortunate in its selection of tenants, who are mostly desirous of checking the sproad of weeds, and are doing their utmost to exterminate |the blackberry, ragwort and ox-eye daisy pests.
We understand that a notice of motion has been tabled by one of the New Plymouth Borough Councillors to rescind the resolution passed at the last meeting of tlie Council dealing with the appointment of a sanitary and general engineer at a salary of £3oo,with a view to making the appointment a sanitary engineer and borough inspector at a salary of £2OO per annum.
The County overdraft at the commencement of the present financial year was £4,960 LOs 7d. To-day it stands at £10(30 16s. There arc many contributing causes, but it is safe to say thai the caroful administration of tliepast andpresentchairmcn(Mcssrs H. Okey and G. V. Tute respectively) has been much assisted by the strenuous and energetic manner in which the clerk, Mr 11. Ellis, has collected the rates and arrears. During the year current rates amounting to £X,IBo 4s Bd, au;l arrears £314 14s lOd were paid into the County oflice.
Mr W. Burnside, M.A., holding an A 1 teacher's certificate, has been selected as headmaster for the Inglewood School. Mr Burnside is at present first assistant at the Central School, New Plymouth, and is a most capable and conscientious teacher. It is gratifying that the services of so excellent an instructor arc not to be lost to the Taranaki Education District, though this seemed very likely the other day wheu ho was in the last four out of 32 applicants for the position of School Inspector under the Auckland Education Board.
Monday's meeting of the Taranaki County Council will be asked to consider the following resolution passed at a recent meeting of the Stratford County Council That, in view of the almost insuperable- ditlieulties in the way of enacting ellicient bye-laws to ensure the fair and proper use of uublic roads, this council urge upon the Government the need of introj ducing into Parliament a measure dealing with unfair traflie on roads, and containing a permissive clause enabling local bodies to adopt it if they see fit to do so." Copies of the resolution have been forwarded to the Premier and to tho New Zealand Counties Association.
Many a good korsc has been tendered absolutely unfit for work by careless or incompetent shocingsmiths. On the contrary, scores of peculiar-paced animals havo been corrected, and defective hoofs remedied by the attentiou of fully-qualified aud careful farriers. One of the latter class has been engaged by Messrs Cook and Hopkinson, of the Egmont Engineering Works, in Gill street, New Plymouth, and horseowners are asked to note the fact. A specialty is made of racing and trotting shoes, A well-finished set of the latter has just been made for a local trotter, and boars evidence of skilful workmanship.
