THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION.
TRAVELLING COMMISSIONER INTEEVIEWEI).
Mr D. C. Mclutyre, travelling commissioner for the International Exhibition, to be opened in Christchurch next November, arrived in New Plymouth by the liarawa last night from Ouchunga. A D.ulv News representative secured an interview with hiin, ami after he had given an idea of the execrable weather conditions prevailing at Onehunga, and the rough passage down, remarking by the way that the s.s, Earawa was a line sea-going vessel, and a ■'tight little craft," Mr Mclntire informed us that he had met with great success in all parts of the colony he had visited, hi every centre hundred of people had siguilicd to him their intention of being present at the t .hibition, and there was every prospect of tlioir being the biggest crowd of people ever gathered together in any city in New Zealand. Large amounts of space had been booked everywhere, Auckland having reserved 110 less than 4000 feet. Every .neh of the space laid out originally has been taken up, aud tho commissioners have had to take into consideration the matter of erecting extra accommodation. In a number of instances blocks of space 140 ft x 24ft 011 the ground floor have been taken by districts, in order to have their exhibits shown in a compact space, together with sonic general information concerning the district. Mr Mclntyro will endeavor to persuade Tarauaki people to bojk a similar space, this system Doing useful in tho respect that by this moans a thoroughly rcpresonative exhibit can be made, including our farm produce, manufactures, and scenic attractions.
The mam exhibition building is 850 ft. x 280 ft., and adjoining this is au agricultural hall 350 ft long, making a total frontage of nearly a quarter ot' a mile in length. The river Avon, which flanks the building* has been beautified at this point,, islands have been built, waterways constucted, aud lovely gardens made. Mr McIntyre considers the success of the exhibition is already absolutely assured.
A public meeting will be held tonight in the Town Hall, at which the Mayor will preside, to meet the Commissioner and discuss with him tho question of representation at the Exhibition.
