PROHIBITION ORDERS.

1)0 THEY ACHIEVE THEIIt OBJECT. PER PBESB ASSOCIATION. Auckund, March 2(>. The value of prohibition orders is strongly questioned, but Magistrate Kettle is a believer in their efficacy. He stated in the Court to-day that lie was quite satisfied that prohibition orders did a great deal of good, and in this he was supported by the police.

Of course there were numerous cases where men get drink in defiance of orders. In his opinion those best able to judge were the Magistrates and the police, and the police were with him in thinking that prohibition orders, although they did not absolutely prohibit, had a deterrent effect,' and in that respect they were good. As far as hotel keepers were coucerued, they could only be convicted *" of serving prohibited persons, when it Iran 4>own that they knew that the person was prohibited, or did not take reasonable precautions lo lind out. He still held the opinion that prohibition orders had a very good effect, that it was worth while to issue them, and he would continue to do so nothwithing statements made by persons not in a position to judge.
