Sergeant and Mrs Hadilrell have just returned from an enjoyable holiday tour extending over five weeks, From New Plymouth they travelled to Taihape bv rail, and from there by road to Waiouri. The roads were so bad that the mail coach driver refused to tackle the journey, as the coach had been capsized three times ou the previous day. So Mr Haddrell, with others, engaged a private corvejauce, and covered the 21 miles from Taihape to Waiouri in six hours, a sufficient indication of the nature of the roads over which they travelled. "The only thing that kept us from capsizing, too," remarked the sergeant, " was that the mud was thick enough to hold us up." Waiouri is a coaching centre, or should be, as the Taupe, Tokoauu, and Taihape coaches ali pass through. It is only a few miles from the head works of the Main Trunk railway, which ut this point branches off to skirt the base of Ruapehu. After visiting the Taupo and Tokoanu districts, they went to Auckland, and to Onehunga, taking ship for New Plymouth, through which town they whisked on their way to Christchurch, Some timo was spent in the Malvern district, where Sergeant Haddrell has many friends, having been stationed there for many years. After an enjoyable sojourn there, Sergeant and Mrs Haddrell returned homewards, reaching New Plymouth on Wednesday night. The sergeant resumes his duties this morning.
