SAD FATALITY AT PATEA.
HARBOR EMPLOYEES DROWNED. CAPTAIN PETERSEN A VICTIM. [Special to Daily News.] Patea, March 21. A sad drowning fatality occurred here this afternoon. Captain Petersen, pilot here, accompanied by two men named Larsen and Hansen, went out in a small boat to take soundings on the bar. As they were returning a blind roller upset the boat. Twice the mou righted her, but twice she upset. Larsen then disappeared. Captain Petersen struck out for tho shore, 500 yards away. Finding he was unable to reach it, he tried to regain tho boat, but was unable to do so, and was drowned, Hansen stuck to tho boat, which eventually drifted ashore, Hansen being much exhausted.
All this happened in sight of the men working on the new breakwater, who were unable to do anything, though one man tried to swim out with a line. Both the drowned men were married and leave families of four each. Peterson was formerly master of the steamer Aorero and had been at Patea for a ceuple of years.
