ROADING THE BACK COUNTRY.

A. PETITION. The following is the text of the petition whicli is to be presented shortly (o the House of by the settlers of the back part of Taranaki We, the settlers in the Waitara, Iji'uti, and Whangumomona districts, humbly petition Parliament, lo open up communication between Whangamomona anil the coast by means of a road connecting Ihe Marco and Okoki roads. All the sections through which the proposed road runs are already taken up, but many of the settlers cannot reach their farms till the road is lormcil. There are no engineering diliicult.ies to be contended with ill forming the proposed road, and only a short connecting road of 10 or 12 miles, at the outside, is required, some of which is already graded lo a permanent level and opened in a bridle track. This road, if formed, would be of immense advantage to the settlers in the above mentioned districts.

(1) Advantage to AYliangaitmmona settlers: (a) Ability to attend the coast cattle sales; (b) Ability to makeuse of the freezing works and other conveniences at Waitara; (c) Kcduelion of the dislauce lo nearest market from 40 to 30 miles; (d) Ability to trade with the coast towns.

(2) Advantage to settlers along proposed road : (a) Ability to use their sections ; (b) Means of comniunicafiou both with the coast and with the interior for trading purposes; (e) The opportunity to start a co-operative dairy factory, (3) Advantages to Waitara, Urenui, and Urttli: (a) Ability lo trade with the interior of the province ; (b) Greater numbers of buyers and settlers attending their cattle sales; (c) Increase iu numbers of cattle and stock generally at their sale*,; (d) Increased business caused by the working of farms at preseut closed.
