TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Crown ' Lands Board was held at New Plymouth on Tuesday. The Commissioner (Mr F, Simpson) presided, and there wero also prosenl: Messrs Heslop, Rattcnbury, Connett, and McCluggage. The following land applications were approved:—Lease in perpetuity, C. R. f Thomson, section 2, block 6, Upper 1 Wailara, (iOO acres ; H. Leary, section 2, block 10, Waro, 900 acres.'Optional right of purchase, J. Hunt, section 2, block 3, Opaku, 1477 acres. TUAXsI'EUS. Applications were received as follows : A. Brodie to A. Brodie and the Misses M. A. and A. Brodie, section 1, block 4. Ohura; K. Groshinski to h. H. James, section o. block 5, Malice; G. Seymour Io G. Seymour and S. Pikett, section 1.2, block" 15, Aria; K. M. Murley to R, Smith, section 13, block U.Mimi; G. Corbett to W, F. McAllum, sections It and 17. block 10, Capo; K, S. Riggal to K. Xops, section 12, block 1, sections 4 and 30, block 2, Ngatimarti. The application of A. Brodie was refused, as the Misses Brodie have not complied to the conditions of residence ou their own holding, F. Groshinski'* application was held over for further explanation. The other applications were agreed to. The sub-lease of sections :1!) and. 41, block 14,1'ouatu, from E. McLoughliii to Lillie O'Keefe, was agreed to. W. Sheridan applied to purchase the freehold of section 17, block 7, Eg moot. —Approved. A number of mortgage matters were approved, and the action of the ComI missioner confirmed. The Under-Secretary of Crown Lands wrote with reference to access to Section 3 Block 14, Upper Wailara, selected • by S. Lowe, and the expense of making a road to it. It was suggested that lie should exchange it for Section 5, Block 13 Upper Waitara, nearer to the existing road, as it would cost less. flic board will have no objection to [ the exchange if desired by the selector. A report was read from Mr H. M. 3kect, District Surveyor, on Sections \ 46, 47, aud 49, Raugitoto, Tuhua 1 Block, through which passes the steel tramway constructed and used by Messrs Ellis and Buruand, sawmiilors. —Report adopted. The ranger (Mr Barron) reported ou tho present condition of improve- \ incuts on Section 4,,810ck 8, Ngatiiu- , iru, at present open for selection.— I Adopted. A report was also furnished on Section 2, Block 5, Mahoc, at present i open for selection at 16s (id per acre, adjoining the above.—Tne price is to i be reduced to 10s per acre. [ P. D. Smyth, whose interest in j Section 12, Block 9, Totoro, was for- . feitcd last meeting, wrote stating that . ho was sawing the timber for his house and improving his selection.— In the circumstances the Board rc- ' scinded the forfeiture.

F. and S. J. Wren applied for a reduction of rent on Section 3 Block 9, [fawera, Tokaora settlement, as there are ten acres out of 54 leased to him that are either plantation or water. F. Wren asked to bo allowed to transfer his undivided interest to S. J. Wren— The transfer was approved, but the Board could not see its way clear to reduce the rent.

J. Fitzgerald applied for the rent which he would have to pay to Connor, under the Bush and Swamp Act, for a transfer of Section 8, Block 15, Aria, be remitted to him—.Agreed to. Tho mode of disposal of Section 75, Block 6, Ngairc, as suggested by the Under Secretary for Crown Lands, was again considered.—The Board can see no reason to depart from its former resolution on the subject. Phillip Stoffel applied to be exempted from personal residence ou Sections 18, 19, 24 and 25, Block 11, Ngaire, as he is now living on Section 54 A, Block 11. Ngaire.—Approved. M. O'Shea made a similar application in respect of Sections 10, 16 and 17, Block 11, Ngaire, as she is residing with her sons about two miles distant. —Approved. Permission was also given lo remove a small building ou Section 10 to Section 17.

The Waimate Road Board submitted proposals for expenditure of thirds amounting to £45 9's Hid.—Approved. H. Dcmpsey' applied to purchase part of Nob's line adjoining his pro perly, Part 20, Fitzroy district, being portion of the land applied for by W. L. Fiizherbcrt.—The matter is being held over for replies from the adjoining owners,

The application of G. Simpson for a. lease of Section 35, Mnngaroa Suburban Recreation Reserve, was again considered.—Tenders are to he invited for a temporary lease, lu pursuance of a resolution passed at the previous meeting in connection with an application by R. T. Clark, that the rent of his section, No 60, Spotswood Settlement, be reduced to the producing value of the land, a report from the Ranger was laid on the table. It was decided that the forfeiture of H. Mehaffy's interest in Section 01, Block J., Paritutu, be recommended, owing to the rent being in arrear. The Board agreed to defer the proposed inspection of the settlement to another occasion.

The Under-Secretary for Crown Lands forwarded a letter from the Government; Advances to Settlers ollice on the subject of proportion of valuation for improvements on Section 5, Block 11, Opaku, allocated to the Superintendent as mortgagee.—Resolved that the present valuation will not allow of the Superintendent's security being more than £ 370.

The ranger reported upon tho inspection of 227 holdings, covering an area of jM,951 acres. Requirements were C25,2(U worth of improvements and 209 resident holders, while the improvements effected were valued til £57,73;) and IS9 holders were now residing. Twenty wero in default for non-residence, two for residence and improvements, and eleven for improvements only.—Those in default where not otherwise dealt with by the Board, are to he notified to show reason for non-compliance with the conditions.

A further extension of time to July Ist was given under the special circumstances to J. Kearns, Section ('., Block 2, Hcao, an improved farm settler who has not yet complied with residence conditions.

The interests of P. Walker, Section 5, Block 11, Totoro, and S. H. Smallman, Section 0, Block 13, Ohura, were declared forfeited for non-residence. i J. McDonald, Section 1, Block 15, | Aria, asked for an extension of time as there is no access—Six months granted.

The holder attended the Board in reference to arrears of rent on Sectiou 25, Block It!, Huiroa.—After considering her statement it was resolved '"Thai the Board is of opinion that owing to the amount now due, the time has arrived I hat the rent in arrears should be reduced by at least flail and be paid before July Ist next." Alice Orr Slaving failed to reply to notice re non-improvcmenl of Section 11, Block 15, Aria, it was decided to declare the Section forfeited.
