FIRE BRIGADE DRAINAGE.
TO THE EDITOE. Sm, —I have to call your attention to the leader in your paper of this morning's date which is calculated to injure me professionally, Iu the article in question you credit me with preferment for systems which are opposed to modern usage, and in favor of methods which would militate against public health. Such a statement as that is utterly opposed to either my views or my practise, and certainly your article, as published, will act very seriously against me at the present time.—l am, etc, E. Harvey-Guidon, Borough Engineer. i That there should be no aspersion cast on Mr Gibbon we distinctly stated at the outset in the article : "It "should be at once acknowledged that "there i» no question of professional ''iueonipi'lence involved, so fur as the "Borough Engineer is concerned. It "is still a question of contention "amongst engineers as to which system "of drainage is the more effective, eon. "sidered from the points of view of "economy and'publie health." There is no warrant for the statement that we credited the Engineer with methods which militate against public health. We said no such thing. What we objected to in the system laid down at the Fire Brigade station was that it was not in accordance with the bylaws, the observance of which by private persons the Council insists upon. Mr Gibbon believes in one system of drainage; thc'Government Health Department iu another. The Council have framed their by-laws in accordance with the Government system. Which is the better is not for a layman to say. It is still a matter of contention, as we observed, amongst engineers -Eo.j
