QUESTION OP PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT. (I'EH I'UUSS ASSOCIATION.) Wei,mnijton, March 15. Speaking at a banquet to Mr Field, M.1t.R... at Levin last night, the Premier referred to the purchase of the Mauawutu Railway Company's line by the Government. He said that under the original agreement, if the Government took over the lino within 21 years, it had to pay 10 per cent, on the cost. Taking the latter at half a million, it would mean £"50,000 percentage. The line was opened the entire length in 1880, so that in November next year the 21 years would expire, and after that no percentage would have to be paid. The Government had to give 12 months' notice before purchasing, anil they hud up till November to give such notice, and the term was so nearly expired that the Government could not see its way to make a present of i'aO,Ouoto the Company. Strenuous efforts, he said, were being made to complete the North Trunk line within three years, and the present Parliament would nave to deal with taking over tb.o Ma lawatu line.
