DAMAGE TO FLAX AItEAS. FEU I'IIESS ASSOCIATION. Thames, March 14. A fire is burning on an extensive area of the flax lauds of Piako swamp, and considerable damage has been done to flax, which is the property of various owners. The fire has been burning for two days, but it is believed it is now overcome. Fearing it would spread to other large llax growing areas, a large number of men were employed to cut a gap a chain wide to prevent the flames spreading and this work was successfully completed. Favored by the direction of the wind the fire was confined to within the original compass. What appears to lie large bush fires arc burning south of the Thames.
