THE CASUALTY BOLL. 591 PERSONS RESCUED -, 1219 KILLED. TERRIBLE SCENES. GALLANT RESCUERS. Pa ms, March 11. The latest roll shows that 591 men were rescued and 1219 asphyxiated or crushed to death. Recent heavy rains in the north of France produced landslips, which. apparently affected the mines. First accounts suggested that 20 had . been killed, but late in the afternoon ' further rescue work was abandoned, . the extent of'tlic disaster being realised, though thero arc faint hopes that some of the buried have refuged in the lateral eolleries. Many were rescued frightfully burnt. M. Bar, the Chief Engineer, led a band of 50 rescuers. He declares that the scenes below were awful.

A second rescue party reached a depth of 500 feet and heard their mates 600 feet lower. The position of the latter was inaccessible.
