MINE DISASTER
AWFUL FRENCH TRAGEDY. 1193 MINERS ENTOMBED. A SUBTERRANEAN FURNACE, NO HOPE OF RESCUE. AGONISING SCENES AT THE PIT-HEAD. Receivod 12,12.15 a.m. Pabis, March 11. A lire, which occurred at a depth of seven huudrod feet, led to a terrific ex. plosion in tho Courricrs* mines in Franco, at seven o'clock on Saturday morning. The cages wero immediately iev troyed and the cuttings filled with poisonous fumes. Three gallories became a rait furnace, the flames loaping from the pit's mouths. Seventeen hundred and ninety flv« miners were buried, of whom four hua* drod wore roscued. The latest estimate of the deaths it eleven hundred and ninety three. Agonising scenes were witnessed at the pit's heads, the grief of the women friends of the entombed miners being harrowing. When the news spread that the gal. leries.were caving in, further attempts at rescue were abandoned.
