RANDOM NOTES.

[By " Motuhoa."] Tlie annual meeting of tlio Stratford Raring Club will take place 011 Wedncsday and Thursday. Tlie acceptauces are ivell up to the average, anil should furnish some interesting racing- , Mr Edgar llussell has six horses under his charge Geologist, Southern Cross, Rotoiti, Cyreno, Waikato, and Ainstvorlh. a mare by Freedom from Emerald. All are in work, with the exception of Southern Cross, who is enjoying a run in the paddock. The four-year-old mare, Polyanthus (The Possible—Violet) secured two meritorious wins at the Danuevirke ■I.C. annual meeting this week Polyanthus was conceding weight i in each instance. Last season she sported silk 011 seventeen occasions, securing six firsts, three seconds, and • two thirds, being only six times unplaced. The Jet d'Eau gelding Florio was'| heavily backed for the Okoia Hack Hurdles at Wanganui, when he aud Dalky were left at the post. Florio gave his connections a winning turn at Dannevirke, securing the Hurdle race each day. Mystification, the winner of the Danuevirke Cup, is owned by Mr George Hunter, President of the Club.

I have to acknowledge, with thanks, the receipt, of a complimentary ticket from Mr Thomas Duncan, Secretary of the Masterton ii.O. for the utilumn meeting, which takes place on March -'Jth and 30th. Tomairangi, the five-vear-old daughter of Mahaki and Waiaa, is evidently on the improve. At Danncvirkc slie acted as runner-up to Polyanthus in the Tamnki Welter, and was only beaten a head by White Ribbon in tin- ICaitoke Welter. As a three-year-old Tomairangi displayed some galloping ability, winning throe races in (six starts. Last season she was a failure, only scoring oiie winning Iwaeket. Tomairangi should be worth watching m future events. Sir George Clifford's Quarryman. who broke down during the running of the Auckland Cup, and has since been on the invalid list at Ellerslie, was shippea to C'hristchurch last week. It is unlikely that the horse will race again, as the suspensory ligament in his bad leg has given way. The Dunedin Jockey Club's recent meeting resulted in a profit of i'7(it|. It is reported that Mahntonga will not race again until spring. Mr C, E. Major, M.H.H., President of the newly-formed Association of Horse Owners, speaking at the inaugural meeting held at Wauganui, stated "it was thought by mivny that it would lie advisable lo curtail the num. b« totalizator pei'iltls granted, a< it was contended that tile sutilli stakes meetings induced many ' readies' to be perpetrated." Referringtu the alleged jockey ring, Mp Major went on to say the formatiun of the Association should have the effect of restoring public conifidciicc, as the members would take acI tivc utejiii to wipe out the ring if such j really existed, I hear that the Grafton— (Irillju 1 colt, Heroism, will shortly be added to the list. The Taranaki Jockey Club's ullicial starter, Mr C. 11. Oiiavaunes, having sent in his resignation, Mr C, O'Connor has been appointed t<>act as starter at the autumn meeting. While contesting the hurdle race at the Soulh Auckland meeting hi-t Saturday, Seabird crashed into the last fence, smashing it to pieces, aim slaking herself badly in the chest, which necessitated live stitches being put in. The muv was otherwise kuocked about, and it will probably be sometime before she races again, Whiles exercising the marc liesdeniona last week at Opotiki, a young lad named Prank Kelly sustained fata 1 injuries through the mare running into barbed wire on the course.

Horse owners are reminded that nominations tor the Manaia Hack Hating Club close with the Secretary this evening, at 10 o'clock.
