NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held on Monday. Present: His Worship the Mayor and Crs Monleatli, Effing, Brooking, Collis, J [utclien, Stolir, Browne, and Webster, CliM EXT, Messrs Wilson and Co., Auckland, having completed the contract For cement supplies, ask-d for the Council's opinion of (lie quality as compared with imported cement. The return of the deposit was authorised, aud on the motion of Cr Collis, a ce/'tilicate will he sent as to (lie (|iiality; the Mayor expressing gratification at the fact that the New Zealand cement was of the liest quality, and that it was not now necessary to import. irrzuov. slr A. A. I'ikett asked if the Council could extend its water service to reticulate Htzroy.—Referred to the engineer for his report. nitK STATION SiXIT.tTIOJf. l'lie ISew Plymouth Fire Brigade wrote, asking that a report be furnished as to the state of the sanitary arrangements at the station, for it appeared to members that things were not as they should be. Tho Engineer reported that he had .. not the slightest hesitation in stating that the work is well done aud is effective.
Cr,Collis reported that some one had told the Brigade the work was not in accordance with the bye-laws. Cr Brooking said that that was enough. He was of opinion that the Council was the best judge of whether or not the work was in accordance with the bye-laws It was no concern of the Brigade. Cr. Stohr differed. It was very muck the business of the men living there. The Brigade is to be asked to lay a specific complaint. AUATTOIK CIIAIIHUS. The Premier wrote that the correspondence regarding the abattoir charges for pigs killed by tlic Taranaki Bacon Co. had been referred to the Minister for Agriculture. The Mayor said that the Council had evidently 110 power to enforce tho payment of sixpence per head as against 2s Gd paid by local butchers. Cr. Hutchcn said that was not the case. The Company had to pay Government inspection charges of a minimum of £7 per month. Their pork was inspected too. Cr. Collis summed it up. "The Council is entitled to a fee, and by the dclav of the Government we have been juggled out of it. The whole thing is due to neglect nt Wellington." No action taken.

Mr Ellerim will be grunted free water for one residence, in payment of compensation for trespass and interference with his dam. WOOES COMMITTEE. The report of the Works Committee (already published) was adopted. WESTERN I'AltK. The Western Park Cenin.iltcc's report was presented by Cr. (I. \V. Brown, who moved its adoption. Tli it sections 332, 331, 358 to 360 V'ivi 111street and Cutfield-road be offered lo the School Commissioners in exchange for sections 491 to 495, Downe-street, on the condition that Downe-street be allowed to be closed from Mnrleystrcet to section 490, full width of road, anil from thence to Cutlicld-road, 30 feet wide.—Tlie report was adopted, the Mayor seconding. aiuttoik's. Tho Abattoir Committee favored the granting of Messrs Sole Bros' application for the right lo erect boilingdown works near the river, adjacent io the abattoirs, on payment of an annual rental of £l.—Adopted. BATHS. Cr. Collis moved the adoption of the Baths Committee's report, recommending that permission be given to the Swimming Club to paint 011 the sides of the baths in small neat letters the various distances. DItAINAQK. The Drainage Committee's report, dealing with various applications for concessions, was adopted, ijnd several ratepayers will be given notice lo connect their properties with the sewers in a mouth.
