SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

_ At a special meeting of the Board of School Commissioners, there were pres. ent: Messrs J. Wade (chairman), Faull and Jennings, M.H.Ji. Apologies were received from Mr Simpson (Commissioner of Crown Lands), who was absent in the King Country, and Mr Major, M.K.11., who had been unexpectedly called to Wellington.

.Hie matter of revised leasing conditions was attain discussed, and it was decided, on the motion of Messrs Jennings and Wade, to adopt the draft submitted by the Board's solicitor. The applications of Messrs Carter and W. Slicllicld for the conversion of their present terminable leases were received, and Messrs Jennings and Wade were appointed to investigate and report as to the terms upon which it is desirable that surrenders be accepted from these applicants and new leases granted to them ; also that Mr Sheffield be informed that the Board will favorably consider his application for a surrender and new lease if lie will pay for the residue of the present term the improved annual value of the laud, and agree to the renewals being at the then improved annual value with five per cent, added on the present value of the substantial improvements of a permanent character. A list of defaulters desirous of obtaining relief by surrender or allowance was submitted by the secretary, and held over for consideration at a future moeling.

The Minister of Defence wrote acknowledging the chairman's letter respecting the reserve at Waiwakaiho taken for a rifle range. Mr Jennings gave notice to move that the secretary prepare a schedule of: the number of leases now taken up by l-settlers throughout ll|c Taranaki district in the past five years, and the area of educational reserves in the North, South, East ami "West portions of the Taranaki Lund District.
